THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON MURALI KARUNAKARAN

What a shame! While a congress member, Murali‘s motivation was always personal - to seize power in the party. In the mind of the ordinary citizen who are Congress supporters, Murali is the ultimate symbol of treachery. One cannot forget the Ernakulan 2003 September byelection during A K Antony’s chief ministership, when the Karunakaran father and son duo, in a shameful show of groupism, supported the Marxist candidate Sebastian Paul , while enjoying the privileges of congress party membership.

What does Congress need such corrupt backstabbers for? I wouldn’t use the Brutus analogy here, for Brutus was a noble man who stabbed from the front, because he loved Rome more. With this father and son duo, it was a fight to bring down Antony who was trying to assert himself as the CM by installing Principles into the Congress party, and bring about unpopular reforms that were good for the state and would bring pay dividends eventually. If the Centre had stood by Antony, the congress would have been a much stronger party now, and emerged, by this time, like a phoenix, after the initial setbacks that the Karunakaran duo would have succeeded in causing.

But then, Antony did not put his foot down, as he did once after the Emergency. Oomen Chandy and his supporters were helpless. The high command gave enough time for Antony to save his face and silenced Oomen Chandy’s resistance to the Karunakans by giving him the Chief Minister ship. A magnificent opportunity for self correction was lost. That same hook or by crook attitude is what we see today. There is no room for principles in politics. Also, what we witnessed on 2003 was the question of WHO ARE THE INHERITORS OF THE CONGRESS PARTY? tHE DYNASTY OR THE HARDWORKING PLEBIAN. Needless to say, the high command had its own reasons to favour the former.

But there are many fools of which I am one, who never give up hoping. I know that for many ordinary Congress voters like me, the 2003 bye elections was a defining moment for our political affiliations. The Indian National Congress was no longer the only party for us. In the absence of an alternative, there was a loss of interest in politics, resulting in a reluctance to cast our votes.

The High Command does not realize the damage that it is doing by taking this very epitome of arrogance and corruption back into the party. A person who can go public calling his own sister Munjenma shatru (enemy in the previous incarnation), who kept party hopping, who fell out with the father and who has harshly criticized every congress leader of import and who has proved to be absolutely without scruples when it comes to self aggrandisment, is being taken back into the folds of the party. Party, for goodness sake, is not a family matter. It should factor in the concerns of the voters. Such decisions should not be taken, ignoring the wishes of the people.

Ideally, Oommen Chandy, Chennithala should break away from the Congress and perhaps go into an electoral arrangement with the parent party. They have enough political base for that. That’s the only way this prodigal son can be leashed once he returns.

Once again, shame on Congress High Command! A party which takes decisions for old time’s sake, and succumbs to emotional blackmailing by a stalwart who has never been the best party man but whose only endearing quality to the High Command is the support he extended to a Prime Minister when she was being isolated by her more conscientious partymen for trampling over democratic values , is not a party for which I’d take the trouble of casting my vote for.

It’d be a betrayal of my conscience.

  1. When prodigal son returned he got best food and feast by his father. But its the electorate who will decide to vote for Murali or not. I dont think even if a landslide victory comes for UDF even then Murali may become an MLA. Kerala people may be silent but wise and have enough venom to bite with when an opportunity comes.

But there is another community angle and power struggle in this. If you analyse closely you can see that its A.K.Antony who helps Muraleedharan everytime. He only allotted him MP seat, then ministerial berth, just to appease Karunakaran factor or make it sure that no other factor emerge in the party.

Antony feels comfortable when Karunakaran is the foe and most of the young cadre are all brought up and supported by Karunakaran only. Even Vayalar Ravi jumped to Karunakaran faction when he felt that he was going to be a big zero and defeated A.k.Antony for party chief post.

Now Ummen Chandy Chennithala nexus is not liked by A.K.Antony, he want to split it or marginalise it. When Murali rejoins he will form the faction again and UDF become more pro-active in propaganda against CPM. Murali is a good orator but not clever enoough.

I think with help of A.K.Antony Murali will rejoin and soon Chennithala will feel the heat for his chair.

  2. If Murali is a backstabber in congress so were the so called great leaders of congress like A.K.Antony ,Oomman chandy and Vayalar Ravi . People have not forgotten the resignation of A.K.Antony in protest against the nomination of Indira Gandhi ,the mother-in-law of his present leader Sonia Gandhi. The prodigal sons like him and his followers came back to Indira Congress without the humiliation now being meted out to Murali by Oomman Chandi or M.M.Hassan. Had Karunakaran ,in his powerful days ,protested against these prodigal sons' entry to Indira Gandhi, they woyld have been in history's rubbish bins by now

  4. u express exactly what i feel about this issue...i was under the impression that congress was in for a change...as a party more defined by the work what the leaders do...but unfortunately it seems like the party is goin the old ways...this is like a betrayal for ordinary people who put faith in the new change coming in the party!:(

  6. Father's 'sick wish '....Sick father's wish, A 'sick' wish of the father,Sick father and son....
One can call this by any name.
We see these scenes generally in Indian movies, as well as in Indian politics. Both have common rules. Both have actors and actresses.Dynasties continue in India after independance,in movies and in politics.Fourth generation of actors from Kapoor family,as well as most of the Hindi star families. And so in Indian politics.
Has congreess got an existance without the Nehru family? With all the awareness, everyone takes it for granted. No one comments or compalins about it.Not surprisingly, other politicians follow the suit."Makkal Rashtreeyam" is not strange to us,and well accepted. Why did they accept Murali in to the party to begin with? Why was he made the Party leader in Kerala? So,from the very beginning,it is all corruption and nothing else. At least, Karunakarn has a reputation that he helped those who gave him 'scrotal support'.
No one complained about the other 'sick' father Balakrishna Pillai. He can be seen healthy, only if he is in power, and a minister.Mani and other compatriots are giving it a try.Who is exception?
Now,cheating and backstabbing is an accepted protocol in our party politics. They all carry the S shaped daggers..and host the ruthless killers and gundas. All belong to that clan.A K Antony is no way better.I dont think India has ever seen such an impotent politician. He stabbed at many, and was forgiven.Only Karunakaran stayed with Indira at those difficult times.Naturally,Congress has obligations to him.Murali's entry is almost done. They are just trying to make a it an interesting and idiotic show. The impotent leaders here like Oommen Chandy and Chennithala, will just swallow all the excreta from the centre and continue blabbering. Do they have the guts to stand up and continue their refusal or create an agitation? Or just walk out of a party that doesnot follow any principles? Simple. These are all leeches just waiting for their chances to suck blood. They are all the same, wearing different multicolored masks. Some faces can be seen through the masks, some just take time to be exposed..thats it.
